The criminalization of poverty by Child Protective Services (CPS), family court, and child support services has gone unchecked for too long. Rather than protecting children and providing families with care, these family policing systems wage a daily, unrelenting war against poor families.
Often, the only reason families become entangled in these systems is for the crime of parenting while poor. CPS and family courts continue to build cases against parents based on scant evidence, propped up by the classism of social workers, who respond to families with judgement rather than support. Why is the child support system criminalizing poor fathers and exploiting impoverished families for profit?
Poverty is not a crime. Parenting is not a crime. Why then do the state government, its courts, and its agencies senselessly destroy families over resolvable issues? Why does state funding flow towards the regulation, surveillance, and policing of families when that money could be spent instead on resources to keep famiiies together.
Our mission is to end the oppression of poor families by systems of Family Policing by organizing our communities and visioning legislation in partnership with elected officials that addresses the root causes of the most harrowing challenges families face.
Join us at 2pm on October 29, 2022 on the West Steps of the California State Capitol as we demand an end to Family Policing, and an end to the war against poor.
